The Road to Enlightenment

First eCM congress dedicated to orthopaedic and trauma related infection
Combined with APOA Infection Section Annual Scientific Meeting 2011

Up to 15 invited keynote speakers. Bringing together research scientists (Infection, Materials Science, Surfaces, Immunology) infectious disease specialists and practicing orthopaedic surgeons. General Infection related topics also accepted.

So What is This About?

One of the most common and serious complications associated with the implantation of a biomaterial into a biological system, such as the human body, is bacterial infection. This issue is especially overlooked in the fields of tissue engineering and biomaterials. These infections usually involve bacterial colonisation and biofilm formation on the implant itself, though infections may also develop in the surrounding tissues. This conference aims to bring together microbiologists, biomaterial scientists, trauma surgeons, tissue engineers and cell biologists to focus on the latest research in bacterial pathogenesis, biomaterial strategies to reduce these infections and the host response to implant related infections. A special focus will be on orthopedic and trauma related infections. The outcome should be an increased understanding of the topic and a fostering of the interaction between scientists and clinicians.

This international forum continues the eCM congress series held in Davos. The limited number of participants (150) ensures clinicians, biologists, engineers and material scientists will have ample opportunities for knowledge sharing in basic, translational and clinical research in addition to developments in the field of cartilage and disc, repair and regeneration. As the conference does not have parallel sessions it permits in-depth multidisciplinary discussions about how to advance this research area.

Participation

Best Scientific Paper Award for Orthopaedic Infection

• This is open to all surgeons and scientists with an interest in musculoskeletal infection.

• Applicants must submit in a format of a paper ready for publication.

• The paper can be either clinical or basic science that is relevant to the infection of the musculoskeletal system.

• Papers must be received by the closing date to be considered for the award.

• It is a requirement that at least one of the authors present the work as a presentation at eCM XII: Implant Infection, June 22- 24 Davos, Switzerland at his/her own expense.

• The winners of the prize will be announced at eCM XII: Implant Infection.

• Judges will be blinded and selected from International Experts in the field.

• The number of prizes per year will be one to a maximum of three and if the quality of the papers is not good enough in any year, no prize will be awarded.
